Alvecote Wood/Betty's Wood Open Day - Sunday 31st August

We have another Open Day at the Woods on Sunday 31st August, running from 10am to 3:30pm.
**Please be very careful at the Woods and anywhere else in the countryside while everywhere is still so dry. There is a big risk of wild fires so please do not use any kind of BBQ and certainly avoid smoking and take any litter home with you. Most fires in the countryside begin as a result of people.**
The weather has been so dry the trees have been suffering and most of the ponds are dry, despite our repeated efforts to capture more water: When there isn't any rain at all, there isn't a lot to work with! Topping up ponds with tap water can be very bad for wildlife, e.g. the chlorine can be poisonous for frogs and other amphibians, but there are dechlorination products available that we intend to investigate to give us more options for the future.
We are now offering some excellent FSC Wildlife study Guides for sale to help people identify and learn more about wildlife in the countryside and around home. These include field guides that are helpful when you are out and about, and also booklets that give more detail when you've got more time to read about nature around us.
We have also just got some new machinery to help with our meadow management, after lots of research, plus a lot of money spent! These things are not cheap, but we are passionate about improving the habitats at the woods and the meadows are fantastic for biodiversity. We will explain more in due course.
The main arrangements apply for the Open Day: Open from 10am to *3:30pm* with *last entry at 2:30pm*.
Free entry.
Parking: Please note that there is limited car parking at Alvecote Wood, so if you are able to walk, cycle or share a car, we would be very grateful. There is parking for a few vehicles on hard-standing to the left of our main building, with overflow space for more cars on the grass nearby when required.
